A tragedy shook the figure skating world on Feb. 15, 1961, when Flight 548, carrying the U.S. team to the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia, crashed near Brussels, Belgium. All aboard were lost. From this loss arose the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund. The mission of the Memorial Fund is to provide qualified U.S. Figure Skating members in need of financial aid with monetary assistance to pursue their goals both inside and outside the competitive arena. The fund is committed to awarding skating and academic scholarships to those athletes who have demonstrated excellent competitive results and/or academic achievements, and who have potential in national and international competitions.
Since the inception of the Memorial Fund in 1961, millions of dollars in financial support have been awarded to thousands of figure skating athletes to assist them with skating-related and academic expenses. The Memorial Fund has been supported through the generosity of family, friends, fans, corporations and foundations, figure skating clubs and athletes around the country.
Past recipients of the Memorial Fund include Olympic champions Peggy Fleming, Kristi Yamaguchi, Scott Hamilton and Evan Lysacek as well as Charlie White, Meryl Davis, Jeremy Abbott, Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates.
In keeping with the tradition of supporting those skaters on the brink of greatness, the Memorial Fund also provides financial assistance to juvenile, intermediate, novice and junior skaters who may become champions themselves one day.
Additionally, the Memorial Fund provides academic tuition assistance to skaters attending institutions of higher education to assist them in achieving their goals off the ice as well.
Gifts to the Memorial Fund come in all forms and sizes. Every gift adds to the endowment and helps generate the earnings that the Memorial Fund has available to award athletes each year. Annual gifts, gifts of stock, bequests, life insurance--these are just some of the ways you can support the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund and help build the champions of today and tomorrow!
