Twelve Athletes to Represent Team USA at 2013 JGP Slovakia

(9/11/13) - The 2013 International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating (JGP) Series continues Sept. 12-15, 2013, in Kosice, Slovakia. The event, being held at Steel Arena, begins Friday with the ladies, pairs and men's short programs.

Twelve athletes will represent the United States at the event in ladies, men's, pairs and ice dance. Icenetwork will provide complete event coverage including recaps, photos and blogs.

LADIES
Karen Chen, the 2013 U.S. novice champion, will compete for her second JGP medal of the season after winning bronze at the season-opener in Latvia two weeks ago. Barbie Long opens her season after most recently placing third as a junior at the 2013 U.S. Championships. She earned silver last fall at 2012 JGP Slovenia.

MEN'S
Shotaro Omori comes off a bronze medal-winning performance at the 2013 World Junior Championships, where he was part of an American podium sweep. Nix Phengsy will make his international debut in Kosice.

PAIRS
Both U.S. pairs teams will make their international debuts at this event. Kaitlin Budd and Nikita Cheban are the 2013 U.S. novice silver medalists, while Chelsea Liu and Devin Perini finished fourth as juniors at the 2013 U.S. Championships.

ICE DANCE
Holly Moore and Daniel Klaber begin their second JGP Series in Slovakia. They competed at the event last fall in France. Moore and Klaber were fourth as juniors at the 2013 U.S. Championships. Rachel Parsons and Michael Parsons return to competition for the first time in about a year. After competing at a pair of JGP events last year and winning bronze at 2012 JGP Croatia, the team withdrew due to injury from the 2013 U.S. Championships.

Now in its 17th season, the JGP Series consists of seven international events in a cumulative point-scoring format. Each athlete is eligible to score points in two of the seven scheduled events (pairs can compete in two of five designated events). The top six point-earners in each discipline qualify for the Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, Dec. 5-8, in Fukuoka, Japan.

The 2013 Junior Grand Prix Series consists of the remaining events:

  • JGP Poland: Gdansk, Poland - Sept. 18-22
  • JGP Belarus: Minsk, Belarus - Sept. 25-29 (includes pairs)
  • JGP Czech Republic: Ostrava, Czech Republic - Oct. 2-6 (includes pairs)
  • JGP Estonia: Tallinn, Estonia - Oct. 9-13 (includes pairs)
  • JGP Final: Fukuoka, Japan - Dec. 5-8 (includes pairs)
